The G.711 codec was the first ITU-T recommendation on speech coding and was proposed to ensure international interoperability between carriers.

The VoiceAge G.711 implementation is fully compliant with the ITU-T G.711 recommendation, supporting both A-law (used in Europe) and µ-law (used in the U.S and Japan) companded PCM.
