EFR-TDMA

EFR-TDMA (The Enhanced Full Rate Time Division Multiple Access) narrowband speech codec was developed to replace the full-rate TDMA codec and provide improved speech quality. Indeed, EFR-TDMA (IS-641) provides toll quality speech at just 7.4 kbps.

North American TDMA systems have migrated to GSM, but the EFR-TDMA codec is included as one of the modes of AMR, the mandatory 3GPP standard codec for narrowband speech communications in 3G networks, and it continues to be important as part of the preferred configuration for AMR.
