Selectable Mode Vocoder (SMV)

The Selectable Mode Vocoder (SMV), IS-893, was developed to improve quality and bandwidth efficiencies in cdma2000® networks. Using variable bit rates (VBR) and multi-mode operation, SMV provides improved quality and added flexibility compared to EVRC. Its multiple modes include two built specifically for applications where the encoding rate can be no higher than 4 kbps.

In addition to telephony over wideband spread spectrum (CDMA) networks, applications include telephony over any packet switched wireline network, such as VoIP or VoATM.
