VoiceAge Demonstrates AMR-WB+ Hi-fi Audio Compression in Action with its Mobile Streaming Media Application Showcase

Barcelona, Spain, February 13, 2006 — VoiceAge Corporation, the leading provider of speech and audio compression solutions for mobile and internet applications, announced today that it is presenting a Mobile Streaming Media Application Showcase at the 3GSM World Conference to demonstrate its 3GPP-recommended AMR-WB+ hi-fi audio compression technology in a multimedia streaming application to diverse mobile devices. The streaming application highlights the gathering market momentum of AMR-WB+, which has already been integrated into both media servers and media players to enable operators to deliver high-quality mobile multimedia services at low bit rates.

VoiceAge's Mobile Streaming Media Application Showcase demonstrates multimedia streaming from a single source to various mobile devices over a wireless interface. Using content provided by Airborne Entertainment, Inc., the application features AMR-WB+ leveraging the capabilities of diverse wireless devices, including mobile phones, PDAs, and laptop PCs, as shown in this graphic.

AMR-WB+ hi-fi audio compression technology, developed jointly by Nokia, Ericsson and VoiceAge, delivers unrivaled sound quality across all types of audio, including pure music, pure speech, speech between music and speech over music, at remarkably low bit rates ranging from 6–36 kbps in mono operation and 7–48 kbps in stereo. This flexibility and scalability enable content providers to reach customers on both 2.5G and 3G wireless networks using a common service platform so they don’t need to duplicate their hardware investments. The robust, standardized AMR-WB+ technology ensures that mobile users experience a consistently high level of service quality as they move around, and it allows operators to serve more users simultaneously over their existing network infrastructure with innovative mobile multimedia services.

“All the pieces are now in place for content providers and network operators to deliver top-quality mobile multimedia services efficiently across their networks with 3GPP-recommended AMR‑WB+ hi-fi audio compression technology,” said Laurent Amar, President of VoiceAge Corporation. “Early adopters of this technology will gain a competitive advantage both by raising the quality of the end-users’ experience and by reaping the benefits of its high efficiency and adaptability. Then, as more people experience these advantages, AMR‑WB+ is poised to become the essential codec of choice for multimedia services.”

AMR-WB+ has been standardized and recommended by the 3GPP for multimedia applications, including Packet-switched Streaming Service (PSS), Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS), Multimedia Broadcast/Multicast Service (MBMS) and IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) Messaging Service and Presence Service. It is also specified for Digital Video Broadcasting-Handheld (DVB-H) applications. Independent testing across multiple languages and real-world operating conditions has established that AMR-WB+ provides unrivaled quality at lower bit rates and excellent quality at higher rates.
