Mobixell Networks Continues to Expand Media Adaptation Offering, Acquires AMR-NB Licensing Rights

Adoption of AMR-NB promises to further broaden MMS interoperability

Boston, MA -- Mobixell Networks, the leader in mobile multimedia adaptation, optimization, and delivery solutions for mobile services, announced today that it has further expanded its media adaptation offering, acquiring rights for the AMR (Adaptive Multi-Rate) NB (Narrow-Band) standard codec, an ETSI and 3GPP ratified standard, from the AMR-NB patent pool license administrator, VoiceAge Corporation.

The AMR standard is a speech coding algorithm that operates at variable bit rates in the range of 4.75 to 12.2 kbit/s in its narrowband configuration. It is the only narrowband speech codec offering eight different bit rates that can be adapted according to network congestion, thus enabling significant enhancement of quality of service.

"With the acquisition of rights to the AMR NB codec, Mobixell continues to spearhead the drive for 100% MMS interoperability," said Samuel Keret, Vice President of Marketing at Mobixell Networks. "By allowing handsets that don't support newer standards like MP3 to receive complete MMS messages, adoption of the AMR standard allows Mobixell clients to bring a whole new user segment into the lucrative MMS messaging circle."

AMR NB technology was initially developed for GSM networks, the single most deployed 2G mobile telecommunication system worldwide, used mostly in Europe and Asia. It was later adapted by the 3GPP as the mandatory codec for 3G wireless systems based on the evolved GSM core network (WCDMA, EDGE, GPRS). The AMR narrowband codec was standardized by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) in 1999.
