VoiceAge AMR-WB+ added to VIMIO
Mobile Content Distribution Platform

CANNES, February 14th. VoiceAge Corporation and VIMIO Ltd. today announced that VoiceAge’s AMR-WB+ audio compression coding technology has been selected by VIMIO and integrated into the VIMIO Content Distribution Platform. Through this collaboration VIMIO and VoiceAge are providing operators with key enabling solutions to accelerate mobile multimedia services to market.

VIMIO Ltd. is today providing Live Television and Music services to a prominent mobile network operator in the Middle East. During this service trial one audio feed can serve customers in several networks (2.5G, EDGE and 3G).

“Using AMR-WB+ gives a much better audio quality compared with other known audio codecs, specifically when there are bandwidth restrictions, which is often the case on 2.5G networks. In 3G and EDGE networks, too, bandwidth efficiency is still an issue for both the end-user and the network operator.” said Malachy Harkin, CEO of VIMIO Ltd.
“In a typical GPRS network it can take quite some time to download a high quality MP3 music track of, say, 3 Mbytes; however, with AMR-WB+ compression, the download of high quality music tracks can be achieved up to five times faster with no degradation in quality,” added Malachy Harkin.

With AMR-WB+, streaming of high quality radio can use less than 13 kbps (mono) or 18 kbps (stereo), with higher bit rates yielding excellent audio quality. This opens up many new service possibilities for content providers. Effectively managing the balance between quality and bandwidth enables operators to offer affordable mobile multimedia services for widespread deployment.

AMR-WB+ not only provides scalability and flexibility but also addresses the capabilities of diverse networks and handsets. This means that content providers can reach customers on several networks without duplicating their hardware investments. In addition, the ability of AMR-WB+ to dynamically adjust its coding bit rates in response to varying network conditions, while preserving audio quality even at very low bit rates, ensures that users of mobile streaming services experience a consistently high level of service quality as they move around.

“VoiceAge is very excited about the opportunities arising from our teaming with VIMIO to deliver innovative mobile multimedia services over 2.5G and 3G networks with an unprecedented high quality end-user experience," said Laurent Amar, President of VoiceAge Corp.
"Combining our low bit rate hi-fi audio compression technology with VIMIO’s robust and advanced mobile media distribution system with DRM protection will help mobile operators worldwide accelerate the adoption of advanced content-based services and grow substantial new sources of revenue," continued Laurent Amar.
